NOTES FROM NIGEL
I hope you all had a wonderful winter break and enjoyed time spent with family and friends for the holidays.
During winter break, the Doubletree sports field received brand new turf and a complete realignment of the irrigation system—the students are thrilled! At Shea, one of our families generously, and anonymously, donated two sets of bleachers for the athletic field—one has several tiers and shade for the home-team fans and the other is a smaller version for the visiting teams’ fans. The foyer floor at Shea also received some enhancements; it was given a polished finish, which greatly heightens the look and feel of the entryway. Thank you to Baron Adelmann of Techniquex, LLC who generously donated the materials and labor for this project.
The data collected from the parent survey is in the process of being analyzed. Thank you to all who completed this survey; your formal feedback is very important. The results will be shared with and reviewed by the Tesseract School Board of Trustees in early February.
What is learning? A short question to what appears to be a complex answer, but needn’t be. In my blog—which can be found at tesseractschool.org or by clicking here—I have shared my thoughts on how to choose a school and the country’s efforts to improve education. The former alludes to the energy and curiosity one should find in schools and the latter refers to the impact of the standardization and centralization of our educational system.
In this second edition of The Tesseract Independent, you will find examples of our uniquely student-centered curriculum—Jolly Phonics, a multimodal, multisensory phonics program for kindergarteners, and the ninth-grade Portfolio Presentations and 10th-grade Sophomore Projects, deep and meaningful end-of-semester assessments that ask students to think critically and reflect on what they have learned throughout the semester.
Enjoy!

STUDENT REFLECTIONS FROM RANCHO FELIZ
Casting a shadow as the sun set was a immense green, white and red
flag. On December 5, 2009, seven students boarded the Tesseract van to
go to Mexico. The ride was pretty mellow, considering we had to be there
by 6:45. After five hours of driving, we reached the border between
Mexico and Douglas. Crossing the border was an experience, and we didn't need to have our passports out like we thought we would. We just passed through by pushing a button that chose a random person to have his bags searched.
When on the other side, we all noticed that things had changed
dramatically. Everything seemed worn out and dirty. The streets were
bumpy and had patches where the pavement was chipped.
On our way to Rancho Feliz, we stared in awe at the giant Mexican flag
on the other side of the street. When we went there, we packed 150 food
bags to be distributed the next day. The bags consisted of a bottle of
cooking oil, a bag of cereal, a small carton of milk, a can of tomato
sauce, and packs of beans, pasta and rice. Afterward we ate authentic
Mexican food with a family that has been involved with Rancho Feliz for
a long time. We ate way too much food and danced for the rest of the
night.
The next day we got up early and boarded the bus once again to give food
out to the people who had received tickets the day before. There were
three of us on the bus handing food down to the students who would give
the bags to the people with tickets. As we passed out food, we learned
that people used these bags of food for two weeks, or until the next
distribution occurred. We toured a fairly small home and saw that we
needed to mix cement to make a floor. After three hours of hard, physical
labor, we went to the Mexican orphanage. We played with the young
children for as long as we could until we had to leave their sad faces.
On our way back we discussed how we couldn't believe we did so much
with so few people, how fortunate we are to be in nice homes and
go to a nice school, and how we were planning on going to Rancho Feliz
next year too.

ROCK BAND!
Did you know that the upper school students have the opportunity to rock out during the school day? Tesseract’s instrumental music educator, Wes Hawkins, has created a rock band program that is one of the most vibrant programs in the Valley.
Rock Band 1 consists mainly of ninth-graders, or students with little experience in a rock band setting. The group covers classic rock groups like the Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Pink Floyd, as well as contemporary pop stars like Taylor Swift. The students learn to play the blues, and to improvise as individuals and as a group. They will also create some of their own original material before the end of the school year. Most importantly, they cultivate an understanding of many styles of music, not just the stuff they keep on their iPods.
Rock Band 2 is made up of only 10th-graders. They perform almost exclusively original material created during class rehearsals or on their own after school. Once they have created a burnin’ set of original songs, they hope to participate in some local “Battle of the Bands” events and possibly record a CD. It takes a lot of talent to copy another band’s music, but to create something fresh and new is simply outstanding. Music is such an important vehicle for these teens have to express themselves, and the skills they develop in listening and communication will serve them well in the future.
Both rock bands did a fantastic job on their first performance on Saturday, December 12 at Camelback High School. Next up for both groups is an acoustic appearance at the Tesseract Hearts for the Arts event on Saturday, January 23 at the Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale.
A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL
Portfolio Presentation and Sophomore Project
As the world changes, it is important that schools make changes so our children are prepared to meet the new challenges that await them. In addition to having the traditional set of information and skills, our children need to know how to successfully work well with others, and how to review volumes of information, select what is important, and use this information to make novel interpretations and create new insights. They need to be able to present these insights in clear and compelling ways, and be willing and able to reflect upon and change these insights through discussion.
At this time of year our ninth and 10th-graders join underclassmen across the nation in a period of intense study and effort directed at successfully passing their mid-semester assessments. While, like other high schools, we have testing specific to individual courses, at Tesseract we take a different, innovative approach to assessments. The ninth and 10th-grade assessments that Tesseract students experience are designed to build connections among the different subjects, asking students to use the information they have learned throughout the semester in practical ways.
Freshman Portfolio Presentation
Tesseract freshmen are asked to reflect on the work that they have done throughout the first semester in a Portfolio Presentation. In this process each ninth-grader generates two essays. For the first essay, students choose three examples of their academic work and then delve into how this work reflects the information that has been learned and the progress that they have made as students. For the second essay, students identify three ways that they have contributed to the community and how these contributions reflect their growth, and roles, as community members. These essays then serve as the foundations for students’ oral presentations, which are given to panels comprised of faculty members, two adults from outside the Tesseract community and two peers. Each panel member evaluates a student’s presentation and then engages the student in a discussion at the conclusion of
the presentation. These three components—essays, presentations and discussions—are combined to form students’ final Portfolio Presentation grades.
Sophomore Project
The Sophomore Project is designed to emphasize teamwork and the application of prior learning. In early December sophomores are presented with eight projects. The students list their project preferences and are then placed in teams of two to four students. Each project requires that the students demonstrate their knowledge of information learned in prior classes, combine their knowledge from different classes, and apply their knowledge from these courses in new and unique ways.
Through the Portfolio Presentations and the Sophomore Projects, Tesseract’s assessments enable students to not only reflect on and process what they have been learning in class in a meaningful way, but to also hone the skills that they have been learning throughout their time at Tesseract—skills that are integral to their success in college and beyond.

JOLLY PHONICS
In 2008, Jolly Phonics, a well-respected grammar and phonics program, was introduced into Tesseract School’s kindergarten curriculum.
Jolly Phonics is utilized in the majority of schools in Great Britain, and is used in Canada, Australia and other regions of the world. While there are some areas of the United States that have also been utilizing Jolly Phonics, it appears there are very few schools in Arizona that are doing so. Tesseract hopes to be the first independent school in Arizona to promote this program in the Valley.
As Tesseract kindergarten parents know, Jolly Phonics is a synthetic phonics program where students learn the 42 phonemes (sounds) individually and use these sounds in blending and segmenting. Jolly Phonics treats the English language as a code, rather than relying on the alphabet to teach reading because it is irregular. Using this methodology students learn to decode (read) words through blending and encode (spell) words through segmenting. Students are not limited to word families or sight words; they learn that some words are tricky because the words have irregular spellings. At Tesseract, kindergarten students are actively engaged in daily lessons through sound stories, actions, songs and technology with use of the Jolly Phonics software on the interactive Promethean Board.
Since its introduction, Tesseract has been extremely pleased with the results of Jolly Phonics. Moving forward, Tesseract plans to integrate Jolly Grammar into the lower school curriculum. In January 2009, kindergarten educators, Kate Wilkes and Jennifer Greer, received the Tesseract Parents Association Innovative Teaching Grant for the purpose of doing just that for the first and second grades. The grant also allows for Kate and Jennifer to research best practices and developmentally appropriate activities for reading readiness in early childhood.
For more information about Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar, visit www.jollylearning.co.uk.

Skyping Our Way to a Global Perspective
Recently, Tesseract third-graders experienced the power of technology in a new way as a classmate visiting China joined the class via Skype, a program that allows conversation and pictures to be shared in real time over the Internet. Their classmate, Michael Slade’s, larger-than-life image was projected for the whole class to see, and the conversation that followed included details about winter break, differences in time and place, and plans to use this technology to share China with Tesseract classmates as the Slade family’s adventure continues. What a wonderful illustration of technology used to add depth and meaning to our learning.

TESSERACT TIGERS SPORTS NEWS
The inaugural season for Tesseract’s high school basketball team started in 2009. The team, which is made up of sophomores and freshmen, is competing in the boys varsity "B" division. While the season got off to a rocky start with Tesseract dropping its first two games, the team then responded and put together a nice three game win streak. One of the wins included a thrilling comeback game of the ages—Tesseract was down by 11 with just over three minutes to go. The team applied full court pressure and hit some timely shots to win the game by three. The energy and refuse-to-lose attitude will help this team do great things in the second half of the season.
The girls varsity basketball team has had a tremendous season thus far with a balanced attack on offense and lockdown team efforts on the defensive end. They currently hold a perfect record at 6-0 and have been an offensive juggernaut by averaging more than 63 points per game. The injury bug hit the team early in the season, but the complete roster was finally fielded the last two games before the holiday break. Hopefully everyone will continue to come together as a team and finish strong for the remainder of the season.
We would like to recognize the Tesseract 7th/8th-grade "white" basketball team for making great strides this year. The team works hard in every practice and loves to compete in games. While the record doesn’t reflect individual-player improvement throughout the season, if the team continues to play solid defense and run the offense, it could be a real threat in the playoffs!
The Tesseract 7th/8th-grade "black" basketball team has a record of two wins and three losses. Two of the losses were close games that could have gone either way. This team is known for its sound defense and fast-break ability. Thanks to Tesseract’s strong point guard—he can drive and create his own shot or dish off to one of the many weapons Tesseract has on offense—a match-up nightmare has been created for opposing teams. Playoffs are around the corner and teams better watch out for Tesseract!
